Many people don’t think of drinking 100% fruit juice for heart health, but maybe they should. A growing body of scientific evidence shows 100% fruit juice does not harm your heart and may even help protect it.
A review of research published in the British journal, Nutrition Bulletin, found drinking 100% fruit juice to have protective affects on cardiovascular health at intakes of up to 200 ml/day, and significant improvements in vascular function, blood pressure and inflammation at higher intakes. Overall, the study found fruit juice consumption, in appropriate amounts, does not increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. And, in fact, regular daily consumption appears to confer health benefits in terms of vascular function and reduced blood pressure. Furthermore, studies have reported fruit juice consumption is associated with lower risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke.
While some of these benefits can be attributed to high levels of vitamin C and potassium, especially like those found in orange juice, others are associated with bioactives such as polyphenols. For this reason, positive vascular effects have also been reported in systematic reviews and meta-analyses in cranberry, pomegranate and apple juices.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, one in four deaths in America is caused by heart disease, making it the leading cause of death in the country. Exercising, controlling stress and eating a healthy diet, which includes a daily glass of 100% juice can help. Want to find out more ways to include juice in your diet? Check out the recipes here.
