Tart Cherry Juice Linked to Heart-Healthy Outcomes in Adults

Research continues to reveal the various benefits of 100% juice. In a recent study from the University of Delaware, scientists found that drinking just two cups of 100% tart cherry juice a day can have a positive impact on heart health.

The study, published in Food & Function, observed older adults (65-80 years old) drinking two cups of tart cherry juice or a similar control drink once a day for 12 weeks. In comparison to the non-cherry juice drinkers, the cherry juice group experienced significant reductions in their blood pressure and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels. Additionally, both groups did not experience any increase in weight.

High blood pressure and high LDL levels are both considered major risk factors for the development of cardiovascular disease.  Scientists link a number of compounds in tart cherry juice to positive effects on heart health. These include polyphenols, anthocyanins (the compound that gives cherry juice its red color), and potassium. Potassium-rich foods such as tart cherry juice are also particularly crucial to managing blood pressure levels.

A nutritious diet is an important component of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Consuming moderate amounts of 100% juice is a great way to complement whole fruit consumption and support a nutrient-rich diet. For more science-backed information and resources on 100% juice, download our Toolkit.
