New Study Finds 100% Grape Juice Improves Attention and Mood in Young Adults

Recent research published in the European Journal of Nutrition suggests that 100% grape juice can have an immediate, positive effect on cognitive performance, attention, and mood in young adults. The UK study involved 20 healthy subjects (average age 21 years.)

For the experiment, participants were asked to drink 100% juice made with Concord grapes and a sugar-matched control beverage. 20 minutes later, these men and women participated in a series of tasks used to examine their memory of a specific event, working memory, attention, and mood.

Participants who drank the grape juice felt calmer and experienced significant improvements in reaction time, compared to those who did not drink juice. This research supports a growing body of evidence showing that consuming polyphenol-rich foods (like grape juice) may improve attention task performance in acute settings.

The study also complements existing evidence looking at an older population, which linked daily, long-term consumption of Concord grape juice to improved attention and response time among 40-50 year old female drivers. Keep an eye out for more research in this area, particularly among young adults, in the future.

The study, Cognitive and mood improvements following acute supplementation with purple grape juice in healthy young adults, was led by Dr. Crystal Haskell-Ramsay, Associate Director of the Brain, Performance and Nutrition Research Centre at Northumbria University.
