Is Drinking Too Much Juice Bad For You?

Recent articles may have raised concerns about drinking too many sugar-sweetened beverages and fruit juice, but here\’s what you need to know: juice is a nutrient-dense beverage that when consumed in the appropriate servings is good for you. There is no conclusive evidence that drinking 100% fruit juice is associated with chronic health conditions such as cardiovascular disease, obesity, or cancer.

A person’s health is dependent upon the totality of their diet – not one specific food or beverage. Studies identifying juice as a leading risk factor for health conditions do not prove cause and effect, making results weak and unreliable.

One hundred percent juice is classified within the fruit group by the US Dietary Guidelines because it is nutritionally similar to the whole fruit it is squeezed from, and contains the same essential vitamins and minerals such as vitamin C, magnesium and potassium.  One hundred percent juice also contains no added sugar.

Furthermore, drinking 100% juice has been shown to have beneficial effects on human health in several studies, and is associated with positive dietary patterns including higher intake of whole fruit.

More than 80 percent of Americans do not eat the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables. Instead of unnecessarily alarming people about drinking juice, health professionals should encourage Americans to consume more fruits and vegetables in all forms, including 100% juice.
